What Is Network Attached Storage

Network attached storage (NAS) is a solution that allows you to access a storage drive over the internet. NAS typically refers to relatively small-form-factor solutions for home/small business use. They can designed to have high speed, high capacity, and/or multiple layers of redundancy. A NAS can range from a single drive attached to a router and/or switch, all the way to a rack-mounted array with several network connections and a large TB capacity.

Our NAS solutions are mainly designed for use in home/small business environments. Situations ranging from 4TB to 100TB, with several types of RAID, and multiple connectivity options are possible.

Basic Network Attached Storage

This system is built around the Synology 4 bay DiskStation DS418, providing capacity for 4 drives, and over 40TB of raw single volume capacity. This NAS can be set up as a 9TB RAID 5 (with single drive fault tolerance), or a 6TB RAID 6 (with dual drive fault tolerance).

It comes with a quad-core 1.4Ghz processor, 2GB DDR4 memory, and twin gigabit ethernet ports with support for failover and link aggregation. The NAS chassis also has drive locks, giving you extra piece of mind about data security.

We do not recommend setting up this NAS in RAID 0, and only sometimes in RAID 1.

Advanced Network Attached Storage

This system is built around the Synology 8 bay DiskStation DS1817+, providing capacity for 8 drives, and over 80TB of raw single volume capacity. This NAS can be set up as a 21TB RAID 5 (with single drive fault tolerance), or an 18TB RAID 6 (with dual drive fault tolerance).

It comes with a quad-core 2.4Ghz processor, 2GB memory (up to 16GB), and quad gigabit ethernet ports with support for failover and link aggregation. The NAS chassis also has an option for a 10GBe add-in card, or an option for dual M.2 SATA SSDs for cache purposes. The system can scale up to 18 drives overall, with two DX517 units added on.

The NAS chassis also has drive locks, giving you extra piece of mind about data security.

This system is built around the Corsair 900D, providing capacity for 15 drives, and over 150TB of raw single volume capacity. This NAS can be set up as a 110TB RAID 5 (with single drive fault tolerance), or an 100TB RAID 6 (with dual drive fault tolerance).

It uses a high-end 6-core 3.4Ghz processor, 16GB memory (up to 128GB). It has 2 dedicated gigabit ethernet ports, and has support for several add-in cards, as well as add-in 10GB ethernet. This system uses a 250GB M.2 NVME SSD for OS and general use. This system also has a large complement of high-pressure specialized fans, to keep the HDD array cool and stable.

Overall System Performance

This Enthusiast Network Attached Storage Solution can be set up as a 110TB RAID 5 (with single drive fault tolerance), or an 100TB RAID 6 (with dual drive fault tolerance).

System Core

CPU - Intel i7-6800K 3.4Ghz 6-Core: This CPU is a 6 core/12 thread model. The i7-6800K is a very capable CPU, providing plenty of threads as needed for various situations. This CPU can be swapped out for a Xeon model with relative ease.

CPU Cooling - Corsair H100i v2: This CPU Cooler is an improved 240mm Liquid CPU Cooler, keeping the CPU nice and cool, while keeping the system noise to a minimum, due to the superior thermal conductivity/heat absorption properties of water. This H100i v2 unit will also have high-pressure SilentWings fans installed, giving it even more cooling potential.

This H100i v2 unit is virtually maintenance-free, taking that stress out the users mind.

Motherboard - Asus X99-Deluxe II: This X99-Deluxe II motherboard is compatible with the CPU, has 8 slots for RAM, several PCIe 3.0 x16 slots, 2 PCIe 3.0 x4 slots, and 8 SATA 6Gb/s ports. It has 1 M.2-2280 slots. It also allows for RAM overclocking, up to 3333mhz.

Additionally, it's a very clean motherboard, with a great visual style.

Memory - Corsair Vengeance LPX 2x8GB DDR4-2666: This RAM is a 16GB DDR4-2666 kit, giving the user plenty of room for open applications, as well as keep the i7-6800K running at high performance.

Graphics - EVGA GTX 1050Ti 4GB: As this NAS does not do any rendering, this GPU is selected for connecting a monitor. If desired, the video card can be removed, and the integrated graphics can be used instead.

Storage

Boot Drive - Samsung 960 EVO 250GB M2 NVME SSD: This M.2 NVME SSD is used for Boot purposes, due to the overall read/write performance, as well as the random IOPS performance.

Overall System Performance

This Media Server 2018 performs well in situations that require moderate CPU power, large redundant storage capacity, and very low noise.

System Core

CPU - Intel Core i5-8400 2.8GHz: This CPU is a 6 core/6 thread model. The Intel Core i5 is widely known for high performance and low cost.

CPU Cooling - Cryorig H7: This CPU cooler is a 120mm air-cooled model. While liquid CPU coolers are more generally more effective, they are most often not necessary in environments using stock clockspeed and voltage settings.

Air coolers however, provide an extremely reliable solution, while minimizing risk of failure. In the event that the CPU fan dies, the case cooling fans provide enough secondary airflow to keep the system running long enough to get a replacement fan. This is not possible with water cooling.

Motherboard - Asus Prime Z370-A: This motherboard is compatible with the CPU and selected memory. It provides the user with 4 slots for memory, and 2 main PCI slots.

Memory - G.Skill Ripjaws V 2x8GB DDR4-2400: This RAM is a 16GB DDR4-2400 kit, giving the user plenty of room for open applications.

Storage

RAID Controller - LSI MegaRD SATA/AS 9260-: This RAID controller is a very reliable unit, and has 2 SAS ports, allowing up to 8 SATA drives to be connected to it.
