Why I Designed It How I Did: VRay Workstation

Designing the right system for the current scenario is a core element of our mantra at Top Flight Computers. If you don't get the right parts, it doesn't matter how much you spend on your computer...you'll be stuck with expensive hardware that doesn't work well with your situation.

VRay Workstation Overview

VRay is an extremely powerful rendering engine, with support for highly threaded CPUs and powerful video cards.

VRay can scale up from a single CPU/GPU install, to a multi-GPU system, to a dual-CPU multi-GPU workstation, and peaking at a multi-1U rackmounted server.

Please let us know if you are using VRay RT or VRay Adv, as this is key to correctly designing your new workstation.

System Design

This system has been configured with 16 CPU cores, is designed with 32GB of DDR4 RAM, 4 high-end video cards, and can handle more powerful video cards with no changes.

This VRay Workstation performs well in applications optimized for extremely highly multithreaded CPUs, with very high GPU rendering capabilities.

CPU

AMD Threadripper 2950X 16-Core Processor (afl)

We chose the Threadripper 2950X for its high single-core performance, very competitive multithreaded performance, and support for 128GB of memory.

System Change: If you come across a need for more cores, you can easily upgrade to a bigger Threadripper with no need to change the system otherwise.

CPU Cooler

To ensure that the CPU remains cool under load, we’ve selected a very good aftermarket air cooler. While water cooling does cool better than air does, a big air cooler will do quite well when leaving the CPU at stock settings.

Air coolers are also more reliable. If the fan on this cooler fails, the system has enough internal cooling to allow you to order a new fan, and finish your work.

System Change: If you come across a need for more cooling capacity, you can easily upgrade to a bigger air cooler, with no need to change the system otherwise.

Motherboard

Gigabyte X399 AORUS Xtreme Motherboard (afl)

Because this system requires a high degree of reliability, we chose a high quality motherboard from Gigabyte.

This motherboard has excellent power delivery, a simple visual design, plenty of PCI 3.0 slots, support for multiple M2 NVME drives, and up to 128GB of memory.

Memory

Corsair Vengeance LPX 4x8GB DDR4-2666 Memory

We went with 32GB of Vengeance LPX memory due to the extremely high quality of the internal chips.

This setup will give the user plenty of room for open applications.

As Threadripper is a quad-channel DDR4-2666 platform, the system is more stable by using 4 DIMMs of DDR4-2666.

System Change: If you come across a need for more memory, you can easily add in more sticks, with no need to change the system otherwise. The motherboard selected supports a maximum of 128GB of memory, in an 8x16GB array.

Samsung 860 EVO 500GB SSD

The boot/main SATA SSD and archival HDD were chosen for their high capacity, relatively low cost, and high reliability.

Western Digital Red 2TB HDD

System Change: If you come across a need for more storage, you can easily upgrade to a bigger SSD or HDD, with no need to change the system otherwise.

Video Card

Zotac RTX 2080 8GB Blower Video Card

The video cards were chosen for their memory capacity, CUDA cores, RT cores, and Tensor cores.

These video cards use a unique cooling solution that exhausts heat directly out the back of the PC, preventing heat from building up inside the PC.

Fans

Power Supply

EVGA SuperNOVA T2 1600 Fully-Modular Power Supply (afl)

The power supply was chosen for its high build quality, ample power capacity, and high thermal efficiency.

Upgrading the wattage will potentially make the fan run slower, creating less noise overall. A higher wattage PSU than necessary will also prolong the life of the unit, as it isn't being operated near peak load.

System Change: If you decide to upgrade any single major draw of power, you do not need to change the power supply. If you change multiple draws of power, you may need to change to a rack-mounted server solution that has greater flexibility.
