VRay Rendering Workstation Overview

This VRay Rendering Workstation is built around the high-powered AMD Threadripper 2950X, providing a very high amount of single-core performance, as well as large CPU rendering when needed.

VRay is an extremely powerful rendering engine, with support for highly threaded CPUs and powerful video cards.

VRay can scale up from a single CPU/GPU install, to a multi-GPU system, to a dual-CPU multi-GPU workstation, and peaking at a multi-1U rackmounted server.

Please let us know if you are using VRay RT or VRay Adv, as this is key to correctly designing your new workstation.

VRay Workstation

System Design

This VRay Rendering Workstation can be configured with up to 32 CPU cores, is designed with 64GB of DDR4 RAM, has 4 high-end video cards, and can handle more powerful video cards with no changes.

If your work benefits from having CPUs, please contact us and we can quote you a configuration capable of handling dual CPUs.

This VRay Rendering Workstation performs well in applications optimized for extremely highly multithreaded CPUs, with very high GPU rendering capabilities.


Processor (CPU)

AMD Threadripper 2950X 16-Core Processor (afl)

We chose the Threadripper 2950X for its high single-core performance, very competitive multithreaded performance, and support for 128GB of memory.

System Change: If you come across a need for more cores, you can easily upgrade to a bigger Threadripper with no need to change the system otherwise.

CPU Cooler

To ensure that the CPU remains cool under load, we’ve selected a very good aftermarket air cooler. While water cooling does cool better than air does, a big air cooler will do quite well when leaving the CPU at stock settings.

Air coolers are also more reliable. If the fan on this cooler fails, the system has enough internal cooling to allow you to order a new fan, and finish your work.

Motherboard

Gigabyte X399 AORUS Xtreme Motherboard (afl)

Because this system requires a high degree of reliability, we chose a high quality motherboard from Gigabyte.

This motherboard has excellent power delivery, a simple visual design, plenty of PCI 3.0 slots, support for multiple M2 NVME drives, and up to 128GB of memory.

Memory (RAM)

Corsair Vengeance LPX 4x8GB DDR4-2666 Memory

We went with 64GB of Vengeance LPX memory due to the extremely high quality of the internal chips.

This setup will give the user plenty of room for open applications.

As Threadripper is a quad-channel DDR4-2666 platform, the system is more stable by using 4 DIMMs of DDR4-2666.

System Change: If you come across a need for more memory, you can easily add in more sticks, with no need to change the system otherwise. The motherboard selected supports a maximum of 128GB of memory, in an 8x16GB array.

Storage (Hard Drives)

The main NVME SSD was chosen for its high capacity, relatively low cost, and high reliability.

Video Card (GPU)

The video cards were chosen for their memory capacity, CUDA cores, RT cores, and Tensor cores.

These video cards use a hybrid liquid cooling solution that removes heat from the GPU core very quickly, preventing the GPUs from overheating, and keeping noise down.

To ensure the hybrid cooler has enough air, we've incorporated 4 new high-pressure fans to blow directly onto the radiators.

System Change: If you come across a need for more graphical horsepower, you can easily upgrade your video card with no need to change the system otherwise.

Power Supply

EVGA SuperNOVA T2 1600 Fully-Modular Power Supply (afl)

The power supply was chosen for its high build quality, ample power capacity, and high thermal efficiency.

Upgrading the wattage will potentially make the fan run slower, creating less noise overall. A higher wattage PSU than necessary will also prolong the life of the unit, as it isn't being operated near peak load.

EVGA SuperNOVA T2 1600W Power Supply

System Change: If you decide to upgrade any single major draw of power, you do not need to change the power supply. If you change multiple draws of power, you may need to change to a rack-mounted server solution that has greater flexibility.
