Why I Designed It How I Did: Cinema4D/Octane/Redshift Workstation

Designing the right system for the current scenario is a core element of our mantra at Top Flight Computers. If you don't get the right parts, it doesn't matter how much you spend on your computer...you'll be stuck with expensive hardware that doesn't work well with your situation.


Cinema4D/Octane/Redshift Workstation Overview

These rendering engines are designed to use heavily multithreaded CPUs and powerful video cards.

Cinema4D scales very well with additional CPU threads, though you should pay attention to any other workloads this system may be tasked with (a high-thread CPU may not be as effective for general modeling and editing).

Octane and Redshift scale almost linearly with additional GPUs. We recommend getting the single most powerful video card you can afford, due to the lower power draw, lower heat output, and easier installation into the case.

If you plan on using multiple video cards, consider a blower-style GPU for better heat removal (this workstation uses multiple blower-style video cards by default).

System Design

This system is built around the high-powered AMD Threadripper 1920X CPU, providing a very large number of PCI lanes. This allows the user to easily use up to 4 video cards for workflows that benefit greatly from CUDA.

This Cinema4D/Octane/Redshift Workstation is designed for use in applications that heavily use CPU and GPU rendering, and scale very well with additional video cards.

CPU

AMD Threadripper 1920X 12-Core Processor (afl)

We chose the 1920X for its very large number of PCI lanes. This allows the user to easily use up to 4 video cards for workflows that benefit greatly from CUDA.

The 1920X also has a large number of threads, making it well suited for heavy Cinema4D rendering.

System Change: If you need more PCI lanes for more video cards, several things will need to change. Please contact us if you find your workflow needing more than 4 GPUs.

If you need to do more than just Cinema4D and GPU rendering with your system, please contact us, as this might require a CPU change.


CPU Cooler

To ensure that the CPU remains cool under load, we've selected a very good aftermarket air cooler. While water cooling does cool better than air does, a big air cooler will do quite well when leaving the CPU at stock settings.

Air coolers are also more reliable, as they don't have a pump that can fail. If the fan on this air cooler fails, the system has enough internal cooling to allow you to quickly order a new fan, and finish your work.

That being said, higher-end closed-loop liquid coolers do come with very long manufacturer warranties (upwards of 7 years), so the failure rate is extremely low.

System Change: If you come across a need for more cooling capacity, you can easily upgrade to a bigger air cooler, with no need to change the system otherwise.

Motherboard

Gigabyte X399 AORUS Xtreme Motherboard

Gigabyte X399 AORUS Xtreme Motherboard (afl)

Because this system requires a high degree of reliability, we chose a high quality motherboard from Gigabyte.

This motherboard has excellent power delivery, a simple visual design, plenty of PCI 3.0 slots, support for multiple M2 NVME drives, and up to 128GB of memory.

Memory

Corsair Vengeance LPX 4x16GB DDR4-2666 Memory (afl)

We went with 64GB of Vengeance LPX memory due to the extremely high quality of the internal chips.

This setup will give the user plenty of room for open applications.

As Threadripper is a quad-channel platform based on DDR4-2666, the system is most stable by using 4 DIMMs at 2666 frequency.

System Change: If you come across a need for more memory, you can easily add in more sticks, with no need to change the system otherwise. The motherboard selected supports a maximum of 128GB of memory, in an 8x16GB array.

Storage

Samsung 860 EVO 1TB SSD

The main SSD was chosen for its high capacity, relatively low cost, and high reliability.

System Change: If you come across a need for more storage, you can easily upgrade to a bigger SSD or HDD, with no need to change the system otherwise.

Video Card

2x Zotac RTX 2080 8GB (blower) (afl)

The video cards were chosen for their memory capacity, CUDA cores, RT cores, and Tensor cores.

These video cards use a unique cooling solution that exhausts heat directly out the back of the PC, preventing heat from building up inside the PC.

To ensure the blower-style cooler has enough air, we've incorporated 2 additional fans to blow directly onto the GPUs.

We have selected a set of high-quality pressure-optimized fans to ensure sufficient airflow in the case to keep the system stable under heavy load.

Power Supply

The power supply was chosen for its high build quality, large power capacity, and respectable thermal efficiency.

Upgrading the wattage will potentially make the fan run slower, creating less noise overall. A higher wattage PSU than necessary will also prolong the life of the unit, as it isn't being operated near peak load.
