White Trident | Video Production Workstation

Short System Description, Long System Description, Hardware Selection Reasons

Short System Description

White Trident is an air-cooled workstation designed for Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Premiere Pro, After Effects, 1440p gaming, and streaming. This system was designed with a black/white theme in mind, and a preference towards low-noise operation. This build is designed around a 6-core Ryzen 5 3600X processor and an RTX 2070 8GB video card.

Long System Description

White Trident was our 51st build, several years into running the business. At this point, I’d gained a good handle on lead generation and overall sales.

Devin found us at our booth at GalaxyCon Raleigh 2019 (our second time at this event). After talking to us for a few minutes, decided to take the conversation further and filled out a contact form for a high-end air-cooled workstation designed for Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Premiere Pro, After Effects, 1440p gaming, and streaming.

Over the next several days, we figured out what he needed in the PC performance-wise, and catered to hispersonal wishes.

I have no doubt Devin will return to us when he needs a new high-end computer.

Hardware Selection Reasons

Processor (CPU): AMD Ryzen 5 3600X

I chose this processor for the high single-core and multi-core performance at the time.

Ryzen 3000 had just recently launched, and offered a very competitive performance across the board. In addition to the attractive performance, Devin would be able to easily upgrade to a Ryzen 7 or 9 as his needs changed. An Intel option may have been more powerful, but lacked a wide upgrade path, and cost more.

Devin preferred the stronger upgrade path with AMD, and was willing to make an investment in Ryzen 3000 over Ryzen 2000.

CPU Cooler: Be Quiet Dark Rock 4

I chose this CPU cooler for the excellent cooling performance of air. While water does cool better, air is more reliable, and this cooler fit better with the budget.

This cooler also looks nice in the case, making for a very sleek interior. Devin agreed with the visual design, and understood my explanation of the reliability advantage.

Motherboard: Gigabyte B450 Aorus Pro WiFi

I chose this motherboard for socket compatibility, robust design, and nice black/white theme. Gigabyte is also one of my preferred motherboard manufacturers.

Devin agreed with the visual design, and understood my explanation of the build quality.

Memory: GSkill Trident Z RGB 2x16GB DDR4-3200

I chose this memory kit for motherboard compatibility, speed with Ryzen 3000, robust design, and black/white theme. GSkill is also one of my preferred memory manufacturers.

Devin wanted a black/white theme, and understood my explanation of the build quality.

Storage (SSD): EX920 1TB NVME

I chose this SSD for robust design, high capacity, fast access times, and low cost. When White Trident was built, SSDs were very cheap, allowing us to use a 1TB model. HP is also one of my preferred SSD manufacturers.

Devin didn’t need more SSD space, and understood my explanation of the build quality.

Storage (HDD): Western Digital Blue 1TB

I chose this HDD for fast speed, robust design and relatively low cost. Western Digital is also one of my preferred HDD manufacturers.

Devin wanted fast access times across the board, and understood my explanation of the build quality.

Video Card (GPU): Gigabyte RTX 2070 8GB Gaming

I chose this GPU for performance in Premiere Pro, with certain GPU-accelerated effects in After Effects, 1440p gaming workloads, robust design, and a black/white theme.

Devin wanted high performance in all of his workloads, and understood my explanation of the build quality.

Power Supply (PSU): SeaSonic Focus Plus Gold 650W

I chose this PSU for wattage, robust design, and long-term stability.

Devin wanted a workstation that would last, and understood my explanation of the build quality.

Case: Fractal Design Meshify C White

I chose this case for robust design, airflow, long-term stability, and a black/white theme.

Devin wanted a workstation that would last, and understood my explanation of the build quality.

Fans: 3x Phanteks PH-F120MP

I chose these fans for robust design, airflow, static pressure, low-noise operation, long-term stability, and a black/white theme.

Devin wanted a workstation that would last, and understood my explanation of the build quality.

Accessories: Elgato HD60 Pro Capture Card

Devin wanted to stream as well, and this capture card gives him a great long-term robust solution for handling encoding workloads.
