The Shrenderer | VFX/Post Production Workstation

Short System Description

The Shrenderer is a liquid-cooled workstation designed for Blender (Cycles and EEVEE), ZBrush, Substance Painter, Substance Designer, 3D Coat, Agisoft Metashape, Marvelous Designer, DaVinci Resolve, After Effects, Premiere Pro, Photoshop, and Illustrator. We built this workstation for Jesse Henning and newhope Church. This workstation takes into account high CPU core speed, extremely high CPU thread count, several m2 slots, room for high-speed network adapters, and room for several high-powered video cards. This build is designed around a liquid-cooled 14-core i9-9940X processor and twin liquid-cooled RTX 2080Ti 11GB video cards.

Long System Description

I met Jesse on LinkedIn at some point via a post I’d made, and we quickly hit it off. Over the next year or so, we had a few lunches, cookouts, and really got to know each other very well. When it came time to build his new workstation, Jesse knew that we’d take good care of him.

His existing Mac Pro (trashcan) was woefully inept at his current workflow, and frequently overheated and/or crashed outright. We’d already helped Jesse build a temporary workstation for home use, and not after his home rig was operational, he needed a new “main rig”. While not as powerful as his initial ideas (budget constraints), this new workstation would be significantly more powerful than anything he’d used to date.

I have no doubt Jesse will return to us when he needs a new high-end workstation.

“I was in need of a multimedia rig that could handle a variety of disciplines in 3D Animation, Rendering, VFX Compositing, and Video Editing.

Top Flight Computers was amazing to work with. They carefully and intuitively thought through each design decision pertaining to my rig (The Shrenderer), and maximized the effectiveness and power of the build. They are authentic, genuine, and go the extra mile for their customers.

I have been looking for a good builder for awhile, and after meeting their team and seeing the level of personal care that goes into each build, tailoring it to the unique needs of each client, I was sold. If and when I decide to build another rig, I am going straight back to Top Flight Computers.

No doubt they are the best in the area and you shouldn't hesitate to consider them for your next build.”

Hardware Selection Reasons

Processor (CPU): Intel i9-9940X

For the unique combination of various softwares, the Skylake X platform gave us the best overall performance. While other platforms were more cost-effective, they had weaknesses that would cost Jesse time.

X299 also gave Jesse the ability to upgrade to an 18-core CPU like he’d originally planned on using, and gave him the ability to upgrade his GPU count and memory capacity as his workflow changed.

While expensive, the Skylake X platform gave him the best overall performance and best long-term upgrade path.

CPU Cooler: Corsair H150i PRO RGB

I chose this CPU cooler for the excellent cooling performance of water. While air is more reliable, water cools better and runs quieter.

This cooler also looks nice in the case, making for a very sleek interior. Jesse agreed with the visual design, and understood my explanation of the reliability of high-end water coolers.

Motherboard: Asus Prime X299-Deluxe II

I chose this motherboard for socket compatibility, overall performance, RGB theme, and robust design. Asus is also one of my preferred motherboard manufacturers.

Jesse agreed with the visual design, and understood my explanation of the build quality.

Memory: Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro 4x16GB DDR4-2666

I chose this memory kit for motherboard compatibility and robust design. Corsair is also one of my preferred memory manufacturers.

Jesse understood my explanation of the build quality and preferred the RGB theme.

Storage (SSD): HP EX950 1TB NVME

I chose this SSD for robust design, high capacity, fast access times, and low cost. HP is also one of my preferred SSD manufacturers.

Jesse understood my explanation of the build quality.

Storage (SSD): HP EX950 2TB NVME

I chose this SSD for robust design, high capacity, fast access times, and low cost. HP is also one of my preferred SSD manufacturers.

Jesse didn’t need more space for archival storage, and understood my explanation of the build quality.

Video Card (GPU): 2x EVGA RTX 2080Ti 11GB XC HYBRID

I chose these GPU for long-term performance, unique cooling solution, and robust design.

Jesse understood my explanation of the build quality.

Power Supply (PSU): EVGA SuperNOVA P2 1600W

I chose this PSU for wattage, robust design, and long-term stability.

Jesse wanted a workstation that would last, and understood my explanation of the build quality.

Case: Fractal Design Meshify S2

I chose this case for robust design, airflow, and long-term stability.

Jesse wanted a workstation that would last, and understood my explanation of the build quality.

Fans: 7x Corsair LL120 RGB w/ Lighting Node Pro

I chose these fans for robust design, airflow, static pressure, unique visual appeal, low-noise operation, and long-term stability.

Jesse wanted a workstation that would last, and understood my explanation of the build quality.
