Sanic | VR Gaming Computer

Short System Description, Long System Description, Hardware Selection Reasons

Short System Description

Sanic is a computer designed to run VR games at high resolution, near-max quality, while keeping a steady framerate. VR is much more intensive than normal gaming, so this required substantial hardware. This build is designed around a 4-core i7 4790K processor and a GTX 1080 8GB video card.

Long System Description

Sanic was our first build, and I still remember the entire process vividly several years after the build. I had posted in a Facebook group advertising the business, and didn’t put much hope into the post.

This was about 7 months into running the business (my first ever), and we didn’t have much traction yet. I was getting very anxious about the chances of the business working out.

Luckily, Kellie saw my post, and filled out the contact form for a high-end VR gaming computer. Over the next several days, we figured out what she needed in the PC performance-wise, and catered to her personal wishes.

To this day, Sanic still runs VR games very well, and suits her well in her new game development/animation career path. I have no doubt Kellie will return to us when she needs a new high-end computer.

"I definitely recommend Top Flight Computers for those who are interested in creating their own gaming PC, or for those who would like a second opinion on what parts would work best for their specific gaming needs.

Very polite, extremely resourceful, and very passionate about helping with building your dream PC into reality."

Hardware Selection Reasons

Processor (CPU): Intel i7-4790K

I chose this processor for the high single-core performance at the time.

An i5-4690K would have done decent for gaming, but the i7 gives you more headroom for other things (and heavier gaming). The 4790K had higher clockspeeds than the 4770K, and wasn’t too much more money.

Kellie wanted the better hardware, and was willing to make a long-term investment.

CPU Cooler: Corsair H100i v2

I chose this CPU cooler for the superior cooling performance of water, in a 240mm form factor. Water holds more heat energy than air does, and thus cools better.

This cooler also looks nice in the case, making for a very sleek interior. Kellie agreed with the visual design, and understood my explanation of the performance advantage.

Motherboard: MSI Z97S SLI Krait

I chose this motherboard for socket compatibility, robust design, and nice black/white theme. MSI is also one of my preferred motherboard manufacturers.

Kellie agreed with the visual design, and understood my explanation of the build quality.

Memory: Corsair Vengeance LPX 2x8GB DDR3-1600

I chose this memory kit for motherboard compatibility, robust design, and blue theme. Corsair is also one of my preferred memory manufacturers.

Kellie wanted a blue/black/white theme, and understood my explanation of the build quality.

Storage (SSD): Samsung 850 EVO 250GB

I chose this SSD for robust design and relatively low cost. When Sanic was built, SSDs were still quite expensive, and a 250GB was what the budget could hold.

Samsung is also one of my preferred SSD manufacturers.

Kellie didn’t need more SSD space, and understood my explanation of the build quality.

Storage (HDD): Western Digital 1TB Black

I chose this HDD for fast speed, robust design and relatively low cost. Western Digital is also one of my preferred HDD manufacturers.

Kellie wanted fast access times across the board, and understood my explanation of the build quality.

Video Card (GPU): Nvidia GTX 1080 8GB Founders Edition

I chose this GPU for VR performance and robust design.

Above all, Kellie wanted high performance in VR gaming, and understood my explanation of the build quality.

Power Supply (PSU): Corsair RM650W Gold

I chose this PSU for wattage, robust design, and long-term stability.

Kellie wanted a VR gaming rig that would last, and understood my explanation of the build quality.

Case: Phanteks Eclipe P400S

I chose this case for robust design, airflow, and long-term stability.

Kellie wanted a VR gaming rig that would last, and understood my explanation of the build quality.

Accessories: LED Lighting

Kellie wanted a blue/black/white theme, and the LED lighting worked well for her wishes.
