Short System Description

Red October is an air-cooled gaming computer designed for iRacing at 1080p. This build is designed around a 6-core Ryzen 5 2600X processor and a GTX 1660Ti 6GB video card.

Long System Description

Red October was our 48th build, several years into running the business. At this point, I’d gained a good handle on lead generation and overall marketing.

Stephen and I connected on Facebook earlier in 2019 and had a nice initial conversation about what he was looking for. A few months later, he contacted me again to discuss a new gaming computer build.

Over the next several days, we figured out what he needed in the PC performance-wise and catered to his personal wishes.

I have no doubt Stephen will return to us when he needs a new high-end gaming computer.

Hardware Selection Reasons

Processor (CPU): AMD Ryzen 5 2600X

I chose this processor for the high single-core and multi-core performance.

Ryzen 3000 had just recently launched, and offered a very competitive performance across the board. In addition to the attractive performance, Stephen would be able to easily upgrade to a Ryzen 7 or even a Ryzen 9 as his needs changed. An Intel option may have been more powerful, but lacked a wide upgrade path, and cost more.

Stephen preferred the stronger upgrade path with AMD, and was willing to make an investment in Ryzen 3000 over Ryzen 2000.

CPU Cooler: Be Quiet Dark Rock 4

I chose this CPU cooler for the excellent cooling performance of air. While water does cool better, air is more reliable, and this cooler fit better with the budget.

This cooler also looks nice in the case, making for a very sleek interior. Stephen agreed with the visual design, and understood my explanation of the reliability advantage.

Motherboard: Gigabyte B450 Aorus Pro WiFi

I chose this motherboard for socket compatibility, robust design, and nice black/red theme. Gigabyte is also one of my preferred motherboard manufacturers.

Stephen agreed with the visual design, and understood my explanation of the build quality.

Memory: Corsair Vengeance LPX 2x8GB DDR4-3000

I chose this memory kit for motherboard compatibility, speed with Ryzen 3000, and robust design. Corsair is also one of my preferred memory manufacturers.

Stephen understood my explanation of the build quality.

Storage (SSD): HP EX920 1TB NVME

I chose this SSD for robust design, high capacity, fast access times, and low cost. When Red October was built, SSDs were very cheap, allowing us to use a 1TB model. HP is also one of my preferred SSD manufacturers.

Stephen didn’t need more space overall, and understood my explanation of the build quality.

Video Card (GPU): EVGA GTX 1660Ti 6GB

I chose this GPU for performance in 1080p and robust design.

Stephen wanted high performance in his 1080p gaming workload, and understood my explanation of the build quality.

Power Supply (PSU): Corsair RM750 Gold

I chose this PSU for wattage, robust design, and long-term stability.

Stephen wanted a gaming computer that would last, and understood my explanation of the build quality.

Case: NZXT H500 Black

I chose this case for robust design, airflow, and long-term stability.

Stephen wanted a gaming computer that would last, and understood my explanation of the build quality.

Fans: 4x Corsair ML120 Pro RGB

I chose these fans for robust design, airflow, static pressure, low-noise operation, long-term stability, and a controllable RGB theme.

Stephen wanted a gaming computer that would last, and understood my explanation of the build quality.
