Short System Description

Kaldur is an air cooled digital audio workstation. This system is optimized for extremely low noise levels, due to the nature of the workflow. This build is designed around an 8-core i9-9900K processor and a GTX 1050Ti 4GB video card.

 
 

Long System Description

Kaldur was our 28th build, several years into running the business. At this point, I’d gained a good handle on lead generation and overall marketing.

Marschawn and I connected on LinkedIn in Spring 2018. About a year later, he contacted me again to discuss a new workstation build.

Over the next few days, we figured out what he needed in the PC performance-wise and catered to his personal wishes.

I have no doubt Marschawn will return to us when he needs a new high-end workstation.

Hardware Selection Reasons

Processor (CPU): Intel i9-9900K

I chose this processor for the high single-core and multi-core performance.

While Skylake X and Threadripper have more threads for faster heavy rendering, the Coffee Lake platform was more in the budget. Additionally, while Ryzen 3000 does have a more attractive ratio between speed, threads, and price, it had not been released yet.

Marschawn preferred the immediate stronger editing/modeling performance with Intel, and understood that needing more CPU threads down the road would require a new motherboard as well.

CPU Cooler: Phanteks PH-TC14PE_BK

I chose this CPU cooler for the excellent cooling performance of air. While water does cool better, air is more reliable, and this cooler also runs extremely quietly.

This cooler also looks nice in the case, making for a very sleek interior. Marschawn agreed with the visual design, and understood my explanation of the reliability advantage.

Motherboard: Gigabyte Z390 AORUS Elite

I chose this motherboard for socket compatibility and robust design. Gigabyte is also one of my preferred motherboard manufacturers.

Memory: Corsair Vengeance LPX 2x16GB DDR4-2666

I chose this memory kit for motherboard compatibility and robust design. Corsair is also one of my preferred memory manufacturers.

Marschawn needed 32GB of memory for his workflow, and understood my explanation of the build quality.

Storage (SSD): Samsung 860 EVO 500GB

I chose this SSD for robust design, high capacity, fast access times, and low cost. When Kaldur was built, SSDs were very cheap, allowing us to use a 500GB model for OS and programs. Samsung is also one of my preferred SSD manufacturers.

Storage (SSD): Samsung 860 EVO 1TB

I chose this SSD for robust design, high capacity, fast access times, and low cost. When Kaldur was built, SSDs were very cheap, allowing us to use a 1TB model for general storage. Samsung is also one of my preferred SSD manufacturers.

Storage (HDD): Western Digital Red 2TB

I chose this HDD for robust design, high capacity, and low cost. Western Digital is also one of my preferred HDD manufacturers.

Video Card (GPU): Gigabyte GTX 1050Ti 4GB

We continued to use Marschawns existing video card to drive several monitors.

Power Supply (PSU): EVGA SuperNOVA P2 750

I chose this PSU for wattage, robust design, and long-term stability.
