Et Tu Brute | AutoCAD Workstation

Short System Description, Long System Description, Hardware Selection Reasons

Short System Description

Et Tu Brute is an air-cooled CAD workstation designed for use in AutoCAD that we built for Currin Outdoor Living. This build is designed around an 8-core i7 9700K processor and a GTX 1060 6GB video card.

Long System Description

We built Render Unto Caesar for Currin Outdoor Living in Summer 2019, and a few months later, Jon asked us about getting another workstation for AutoCAD use.

He had a rough idea of what he wanted, and relied on us to figure out the rest of the system.

I have no doubt Jon will return to us when he needs a new high-end CAD workstation.

Hardware Selection Reasons

Processor (CPU): Intel i7-9700K

I chose this processor for the excellent performance in AutoCAD, and fairly attractive price.

While Ryzen 3000 did have a more attractive ratio between speed, threads, and price, Jon wanted something that was well-known and would do well across the board.

CPU Cooler: Be Quiet Dark Rock 4

I chose this CPU cooler for the excellent cooling performance of air. While water does cool better, air is more reliable, and this cooler also runs extremely quietly.

This cooler also looks nice in the case, making for a very sleek interior. Jon agreed with the visual design, and understood my explanation of the reliability advantage.

Motherboard: MSI MPG Z390 Gaming Edge AC

I chose this motherboard for socket compatibility, version compared to the previous board, and robust design. MSI is also one of my preferred motherboard manufacturers.

Jon agreed with the visual design, and understood my explanation of the build quality.

Memory: Corsair Vengeance LPX 2x8GB DDR4-2666

I chose this memory kit for motherboard compatibility and robust design. Corsair is also one of my preferred memory manufacturers.

Jon agreed with the visual design, and understood my explanation of the build quality.

Storage (SSD): HP EX950 512GB NVME

I chose this SSD for robust design, high capacity, fast access times, and low cost. HP is also one of my preferred SSD manufacturers.

Jon didn’t need more space for archival storage, and understood my explanation of the build quality.

Video Card (GPU): Zotac GTX 1060 6GB

I chose this GPU for long-term performance and robust design.

Jon understood my explanation of the build quality.

Power Supply (PSU): EVGA 650 GQ

I chose this PSU for wattage, robust design, and long-term stability.

Jon wanted a workstation that would last, and understood my explanation of the build quality.

Case: Fractal Design Focus G Gunmetal

I chose this case for robust design, airflow, and long-term stability.

Jon wanted a workstation that would last, and understood my explanation of the build quality.

Fans: 3x Phanteks PH-F120MP

I chose these fans for robust design, airflow, static pressure, low-noise operation, and long-term stability.

Jon wanted a workstation that would last, and understood my explanation of the build quality.
