Short System Description

Ashen is an air-cooled workstation designed for recording, video editing, streaming, and VR gaming. This build uses a high-end motherboard, due to the client request for several native USB ports. This build is designed around a 8-core Ryzen 7 2700X processor and a GTX 1060 6GB video card.

Long System Description

Ashen was our 33rd build, several years into running the business. At this point, I’d gained a good handle on lead generation and overall marketing.

Michael and I connected at Playthrough Gaming Convention in Spring 2019. While at our booth, he decided to take the conversation further and filled out a contact form

Over the next few days, we figured out what he needed in the PC performance-wise and catered to his personal wishes.

I have no doubt Michael will return to us when he needs a new high-end workstation.

“In March, I had an apartment fire and lost my computer. I was able to save 3 hard drives, but needed a new PC.

I met the Top Flight team at Playthrough Gaming Convention in Raleigh. From the start, they were friendly and welcoming. Never made you feel like you asked a dumb question and showed genuine interest in helping you. The PCs they had on display were wonderfully clean and wire managed.

They contacted me after the convention and we discussed what I was looking to do. Chris sent me a few builds with different price points. We spoke about what parts is better to invest more money in and why. What was great was they were able to use the hard drives from my old computer into the new build.

I then got to watch my build live streamed. They explained the building process and the parts that were being used, in addition to fielding any questions viewers had during the stream. After that, Chris gave me updates on the computer and testing it out to make sure that when I have it home, I can turn it on and just go.

Top Flight cares about what they do, and the quality and effort they put in shows. Thank you, Top Flight!”

Hardware Selection Reasons

Processor (CPU): AMD Ryzen 7 2700X

I chose this processor for the high single-core and multi-core performance.

Ryzen 2000 offered a very competitive performance across the board. In addition to the attractive performance, Michael would be able to easily upgrade to a Ryzen 9 as his needs changed. An Intel option may have been more powerful, but lacked a wide upgrade path, and cost more.

Michael preferred the stronger upgrade path with AMD.

CPU Cooler: Be Quiet Dark Rock 4

I chose this CPU cooler for the excellent cooling performance of air. While water does cool better, air is more reliable, and this cooler also runs extremely quietly.

This cooler also looks nice in the case, making for a very sleek interior. Michael agreed with the visual design, and understood my explanation of the reliability advantage.

Motherboard: MSI X470 Gaming Pro Carbon

I chose this motherboard for socket compatibility, high amount of USB ports, and robust design. MSI is also one of my preferred motherboard manufacturers.

Michael agreed with the visual design, and understood my explanation of the build quality.

Memory: Corsair Vengeance LPX 2x16GB DDR4-3000

I chose this memory kit for motherboard compatibility and robust design. Corsair is also one of my preferred memory manufacturers.

Michael needed 32GB of memory for his workflow, and understood my explanation of the build quality.

Storage (SSD): Crucial MX500 250GB

I chose this SSD for robust design, high capacity, fast access times, and low cost. When Ashen was built, SSDs were very cheap, allowing us to use a 250GB model for OS and programs. Crucial is also one of my preferred SSD manufacturers.

Michael understood my explanation of the build quality.

Storage (SSD): Crucial MX500 1TB

I chose this SSD for robust design, high capacity, fast access times, and low cost. When Ashen was built, SSDs were very cheap, allowing us to use a 500GB model for general storage. Crucial is also one of my preferred SSD manufacturers.

Michael didn’t need more SSD space, and understood my explanation of the build quality.

Storage (HDD): Western Digital Green 2TB

This was one of the HDDs saved in the fire that took out Michaels original computer. Western Digital is also one of my preferred HDD manufacturers.

Michael didn’t need more space for archival storage, and understood my explanation of the build quality.

Video Card (GPU): Zotac GTX 1060 6GB

I chose this GPU for long-term performance, VR performance, and robust design.

Michael understood my explanation of the build quality.

Power Supply (PSU): EVGA 650W GQ

I chose this PSU for wattage, robust design, and long-term stability.

Michael wanted a workstation that would last, and understood my explanation of the build quality.

Case: Phanteks Eclipse P400S Tempered Glass

I chose this case for robust design, airflow, and long-term stability.

Michael wanted a workstation that would last, and understood my explanation of the build quality.

Fans: 3x Phanteks PH-F120MP

I chose these fans for robust design, airflow, static pressure, low-noise operation, and long-term stability.

Michael wanted a workstation that would last, and understood my explanation of the build quality.
